In Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State, a group of discontented Muslim youths recently staged a protest against the popular singer, Davido, due to a video clip he had shared on his Twitter page that was deemed offensive to Islam.
The controversy began when Davido posted a clip from the music video of his artist, Logos Olori’s new single ‘Jaye Lo.’

The video depicted people praying and dancing in front of a mosque, which sparked heavy criticism from many prominent Nigerian Muslims.
Figures such as Bashir Ahmad, a former aide to ex-president Muhammadu Buhari, Senator Shehu Sani, and actor Ali Nuhi, among others, expressed their dissatisfaction and called on Davido to remove the video and apologize for what they perceived as a “disrespectful” portrayal of their religion.

After facing mounting pressure for 48 hours, Davido eventually took down the controversial video. However, he did not issue an apology for his actions.

This lack of remorse further aggravated some Muslim youths in Maiduguri, leading them to take to the streets. In a display of their displeasure, they set a large banner featuring Davido’s image on fire as seen in a video that has been circulating on social media.
The incident highlights the sensitivity surrounding religious matters in Nigeria and the impact that social media actions can have on public sentiment.
