Toke Makinwa, who separated from Maje Ayida in 2015 after discovering that he had impregnated his ex-girlfriend, candidly expressed that she might have chosen to stay in an unhealthy marriage if she had children with him.

She acknowledged that many women remain in troubled marriages for the sake of their children, emphasizing that she would not judge anyone for making that decision.
She shared her own perspective by saying, “A lot of women stay in unhealthy marriages for the children. For the longest time, you hear so many women say things like, ‘the marriage is done but I only stay for my kids.’
And I’m going to be honest here, if I had a kid while I was married, I may have been one of those women.”
Toke Makinwa explained her reasoning, mentioning that her own traumatic experience of losing both parents at the age of 8, combined with being adopted, contributed to her perspective. She reflected on how she wondered what her life could have been like without these challenges.
